Experience The Iban Life

A little over 240 kilometres away from Kuching lies a traditional Iban longhouse, popular with curious visitors looking to experience the Iban culture for a day or two. Named after the Lemanak River it is located beside, the interesting long house is home to about 23 families living together in the large residence.

Many travel agencies offer a guided tour to the longhouse, which takes either a 4 hour drive through the mountains or a 1-hour ride with a powered motorboat. Both routes take visitors through much of Sarawak’s unspoiled beauty, from rolling padi fields to majestic mountain valleys.

Most guides, upon arrival at the longhouse will introduce you to the inhabitants, sometimes the hosts will greet visitors with “tuak”, a traditional alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice, yeast and sugar. Visitors can then examine and interact with the longhouse and its residences to know more about the Iban’s way of life. Depending on the guide’s arrangement, sometimes visitors might even be treated to a spectacular performance of traditional music and dances found only in Sarawak!
