Malaysian Jazz fans, rejoice! Known for its popular Rainforest World Music Festival, another major Jazz event comes to the land of Sarawak in the form of the Borneo Jazz festival. Formerly known as the Miri International Jazz Festival, the event was rebranded a few years ago to bring it on par with other international jazz events and to conjure a romantic image worthy of the magical and exotic land of Borneo.
Borneo Jazz brings the best and most exotic jazz performers from around the world on to one stage. Funky jazz, latin jazz, oriental jazz, Caribbean roots, blues, boogie woogies—almost every jazz variant can be found at the festival. Viewers can expect to be bombarded with waves of sweet jazz music, each song uniquely influenced by the performers’ unique places of origin.
This year’s Borneo Jazz is to be held across Miri on May 10th and 11th..The 2013 event will see 8 great jazz performers going on stage, 7 of international origin and 1 from Malaysia.
Headlining the festival is the spicy groovy funk group from Germany, Mo’Blow, which is thought to be one of the hottest live bands today. Their new, exciting and unconventional approach won a great number of fans over, and their reputation is cemented with the long string of awards they have won in recent years. They will be the opening act of the event, performing on the first night of the festival.
Other acts include Hazmat Modine (East Coast USA), Jump4Joy (Canada), The Nylons (Singapore, Hong Kong, Phillipines and Thailand), The Asian Jazz AllStars Power Quartet and Scott Martin (West Coast USA), Lisa Young Quartet (Australia) and the West Jazz Band (Malaysia).
Borneo Jazz 2013 is expecting 9,000 visitors this year. Although most of the visitors are from the local and nearby regions, Borneo Jazz expects to further increase their international appeal this year.
